Reach Higher Conference

Each year, our district hosts its own conference to help counselor connect with other counselors to share ideas and research on programs that are successful in their given school. Our theme this year was "Reach Higher" and our counselors are doing exactly that! While I was able to attend a bunch of great seminars, one that stood out the most was " Trauma informed Yoga". We have a great high school counselor who teaches yoga outside of school and is very talented. She said for the longest time, she kept her school life separate  from her yoga life.. Until she realized that many of the strategies she was using in yoga could easily be applied to life as a school counselor- helping students with stress, anxiety, etc.

Now if you know me in real life, you know that I am NO yogi.. but she made it fun and simple to do. I am running a few different groups for anger, and low academics, and I think I could easily incorporate a few calming moves into my lessons. Below are a few pictures of the event and some of the programs that were offered throughout the day.

If you are doing Yoga at your school, please share how you are implementing it and what is working for your kiddos!

Namaste,
Your Floridian Chick!

I never met a counselor who didn't like food:)

Coffee and Curriculum Parent Event

This morning we had a great event to discuss the common core and our new state test. We invited parents to join us as we explained what the state, district, and school was doing for the common core and what the state test would be assessing our students on. We watched this  Common Core Video and then went through what the curriculum guides looked like for teachers. We finished with a list and explanation resources for students and parents to do outside of school to help themselves. Here are a few free resources that we found to be helpful:

I hope that your school has implemented the common core with little/no issues. As times goes on, this new test will show how our students did with the common core.

Happy Common Core-ing,
Your Floridian Chick!
